The E. Marinella style: the Neapolitan tie that unifies tailoring and Italian elegance

More than a century of style and attention to detail accompanied E. Marinella in an artisan path full of success and international airs

The “Marinella philosophy” originated in the year 1914, when the thirty-four-year-old Neapolitan Don Eugenio opened a small shop in the Riviera of Chiaia of Naples. After having completed the renovations, the young founder undertook his first trip to London to meet with prospective suppliers and recreate a small corner of England in Naples with exclusive and refined products.
 
But in the space of about 20 square meters, in Piazza Vittoria, there are the human relationships, all Neapolitan, which always take precedence: availability, courtesy and respect. The values from the owner Eugenio were passed first to his son Luigi and then to his grandson Maurizio, greatly embellishing the brand.

Already at the tender age of ten, Maurizio was breathing the air from his grandfather’s boutique and, growing up, he figured out how to combine the customer’s availability with entrepreneurship, as happens at Christmas Time when the queues in front of the store become endless and he would offer smokes and coffee to those waiting.
 
When you enter the prestigious Neapolitan maison you can almost immediately sense the warm, friendly and polite atmosphere, which makes the customer feel at ease. The family environment is a prerogative of the tailor where you breathe in the art of the ancient Neapolitan tailoring and valuable contribution to the fashion world.
 
In the small space of the business, a universe of tailoring ideas is concentrated, where the impeccable manual expertise is intertwined with artisan imagination and remarkable entrepreneurship. The pastries and the coffee on the counter, accompanied by good taste and a retro decor, calls to mind the ancient Neapolitan lounges and time seems to stand still in a good way.

The mastery and skill born in the small craft workshop of the Riviera di Chiaia was revived in the luxurious Milan before arriving in London, Tokyo, New York, Paris, and Geneva.
 
Today, the E. Marinella brand offers a range of products to the client. Other than ties and men’s accessories, the studio features stylish bags, scarves, perfumes and women’s accessories of the highest order. 
 
After years of hard work, sacrifice and that little tailoring dream of Don Eugenio’s, it has become an attractive international brand worn by royal officials and presidents of state such as King Juan Carlos, Prince Albert of Monaco, the US presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
 
The dress code of the E. Marinella brand is undoubtedly elegance accompanied by the manner of wearing the garments, and above all, the ties. There is a real “art of the knot” which is recorded as being the fruit of personal creation dictated by a daily routine. The way of knotting the tie represents in a certain sense the personality of the wearer. As such, different techniques were born: the “Windsor” knot, the “incredibly simple,” the “escaping,” the “puff,” the “English” knot, the “diagonal,” the “classic,” the “Churchill,” the “bluff,” and the “American” which reproduces a consistent knot applied to a wide tie and is used in the US on a button-down collar. Americans favorably welcomed the wide tie and among the most famous celebrities to wear it were first Richard Nixon and then Ford and Carter. E. Marinella is not only a brand, but an idea of how the ancient Neapolitan tailoring has managed to emerge in the market with the style of its traditional values.
La “filosofia Marinella” ha origine nel lontano 1914, quando il trentaquattrenne napoletano Don Eugenio aprì una piccola bottega nella Riviera di Chiaia di Napoli. Dopo aver eseguito i lavori di ristrutturazione, il giovane fondatore intraprese il suo primo viaggio a Londra per incontrare i futuri fornitori e riprodurre un piccolo angolo d’Inghilterra a Napoli con prodotti esclusivi e raffinati. Ma nello spazio di circa 20 metri quadrati, in Piazza Vittoria, sono le relazioni umane, tutte napoletane, che da sempre hanno la precedenza: disponibilità, cortesia e rispetto. I valori del patron Eugenio furono tramandati prima al figlio Luigi e poi al nipote Maurizio, impreziosendo notevolmente il marchio.  
 
Già alla tenera età di dieci anni, Maurizio respirava l’aria della boutique del nonno e, crescendo, ha saputo coniugare la disponibilità verso la clientela con l’imprenditoria, come accade nel periodo natalizio quando le code davanti al negozio diventano interminabili e vengono offerte sfogliatelle e caffè alle persone in attesa.

Quando si entra nella prestigiosa maison napoletana si percepisce sin da subito l’atmosfera calda, accogliente e garbata che fa sentire a proprio agio il cliente. L’ambiente familiare è una prerogativa dell’atelier dove si respira l’arte dell’antica sartoria napoletana e il prezioso contributo al mondo della moda.  
 
Nel piccolo spazio del negozio si concentrano un universo di idee sartoriali dove l’impeccabile perizia manuale si intreccia con la fantasia artigianale e la spiccata imprenditorialità. I pasticcini ed il caffè sul bancone, accompagnati dal buon gusto e dall’arredamento retrò, richiamano la memoria degli antichi salotti partenopei ed il tempo sembra fermarsi piacevolmente.  
 
“Rappresento una realtà familiare e artigianale profondamente legata alla città di Napoli – spiega Maurizio Marinella – e non voglio che questa caratteristica vada perduta”.  
 
Più di un secolo di stile e cura per i dettagli hanno accompagnato E.Marinella in un percorso artigianale ricco di soddisfazioni e di respiri internazionali. La maestria e la bravura nata nel piccolo laboratorio artigianale della Riviera di Chiaia è stata riproposta nella lussuosa Milano fino ad arrivare a Londra, Tokyo, New York, Parigi e Ginevra.  
 
Oggi, il marchio E.Marinella offre un ventaglio di prodotti alla clientela. Oltre alle cravatte e agli accessori maschili, l’atelier presenta eleganti borse, foulard, profumi e accessori femminili di primissimo ordine.  
 
Dopo anni di lavorazioni, sacrifici ed idee quel piccolo sogno sartoriale di Don Eugenio è divenuto un accattivante marchio internazionale indossato da esponenti reali e presidenti di Stato come il re Juan Carlos, il principe Alberto di Monaco, i presidenti Usa Kennedy, J.W. Bush e Bill Clinton.  
 
Il dress-code del brand E.Marinella è sicuramente l’eleganza accompagnata al modo di indossare i capi e, soprattutto, le cravatte. Esiste una vera e propria “arte del nodo” che ricorda come questo sia il frutto di una creazione personale dettata da un gesto quotidiano. Il modo di annodare la cravatta rappresenta in un certo senso la personalità di chi la indossa. Così nascono diverse tecniche: il nodo “Windsor”, il “semplicissimo”, lo “scappino”, il “puff”, il nodo “inglese”,  il “diagonale”, il “classico”, il “Churchill”, il “bluff” e “l’americano” che riproduce un nodo consistente applicato alle cravatte larghe ed imbottite e che spesso è utilizzato negli U.S.A. su un colletto button down. Gli americani accolsero favorevolmente la cravatta larga e tra i personaggi più celebri ad indossarla furono prima Richard Nixon e poi Ford e Carter.  
 
E.Marinella non è solo un marchio, ma un’idea di come l’antica sartoria napoletana sia riuscita ad emergere sul mercato con lo stile dei suoi valori tradizionali.
